The plug may not catch when pushed down or it may stay down and not pop back up.
To close the drain plug you simply push it down.
The bathroom sink stopper has no lever connecting to it to move it up and down.
And push down on the suction cup to create a seal on the top.
The spring mechanism in the drain plug eventually will wear out.
A sink stopper mechanism isn t difficult to understand.
When you push or pull on the lift rod it activates a lever the extends through the drain tailpiece.
It moves the stopper in the opposite direction to the lift rod.
Push on the drain plug again and it will pop up to release the water.
Either way the drain plug must be replaced.
A stuck metal sink stopper prevents water from draining out of your sink which stops you from using the sink until it is removed.
You just push it down and push again to pop it up but it s not popping up.
Pushing the knob and the lift rod down causes the pivot rod to push the stopper up.
The lever hooks onto the stopper through a hole or hook on the bottom of a long plastic flange that s attached to the stopper.

If the stopper sits too high or not high enough in the drain go under the sink with a flashlight and identify these parts per the illustration above.
Pulling the knob causes the pivot rod to pull the stopper down.
